WHAT IS  SOCIAL DANCE AT DANCING CLASSROOMS?

At Dancing Classrooms, we recognize social dance as deeply collaborative and culturally rich dance forms that exist in all parts of the world. They are practiced in duets or groups for social purposes – celebrations, ceremonies, rituals, sport, exercise, or just fun. Social dances emerge from communities and are passed down informally in social settings, but they can also be learned and practiced in a dance studio, school, or at home.

While social dances can be choreographed and performed for an audience and can be represented in competitive settings or for sport, that is not their primary purpose. Improvisation is integral to the evolution of many social dances and is encouraged once you know the basic vocabulary.

Above all, social dance needs live interaction to be successful! Any dance can be made “social” with intention. You will find community, creativity, and collaboration in our Dancing Classrooms social dances.
